We are seeing a comeback of the Space Age and we are excited! Let’s take a deep dive into this interesting design period and how we’re seeing it in modern designs.
We are seeing an increase in retrospective design decisions. This trend can be seen not only in interior and furniture design but also making a massive comeback on the runways. One trend that we are seeing make a particular return is the famous Space Age which was popularized in the late 1950’s and early 1960’s when architects and designers were heavily influenced by the vast focus being placed on space exploration. The result of this was structurally curious designs that went against convention and normally mirrored galactic shapes and ideologies.
A key influencing factor on this design period was the advancement of technology that helped make space exploration possible. With all of this new research into materials and new technologies, it meant that the possibilities for architecture and design exploded. We saw an advancement in polymer materials and new surfaces becoming a popular choice for interior design. We are seeing a resurgence of this today with the refreshed interest in space exploration by global billionaires such as Elon Musk and Jeff Bezos. This has brought back the same sort of zeitgeist that we originally experienced in the early 1960’s.
We can see this retro design influence coming through in fashion and interior design today through the use of solid colour furniture and fabrics that take on intriguing shapes and forms. The relationship between form and function is pushed to it’s bounds through the unconventional structures.
We have been approached recently to create furniture pieces that have been inspired by the Space Age. We have been incredibly inspired and excited to create unique furniture pieces for our client. The advantage of our product is that it is incredibly durable while also being easily malleable which means that we are able to achieve the curves and bends that are characteristic of this design period. Another key characteristic of these designs are using solid colours, which we are able to achieve with our solid surfacing as we can offer a wide variety of finishes and colour choices.
Our client wants to use these furniture pieces outside which is completely do-able with our solid surfacing material. Our surfacing is completely waterproof and heat resistant which makes it less susceptible to decay at the hands of nature.
If you are interested in creating entirely bespoke furniture pieces for indoors or for outside, we are confident that we can work with you to bring your design vision to life.
