We were excited to work on creating custom benches for the international transport and logistics company, DSV at their head offices in Cape Town. Our surfacing solutions are perfect as they are easily formable and hardwearing. Continue reading to find out more about this architectural project
The infinite possibilities that solid surfacing presents to designers and architects were at the foundation of this project. At the end of 2020, we received a brief from WRKSHP Interior Design Studio and The Signature Group to create three bespoke reception desks for the extensive DSV head offices in Cape Town. The architect already had our surfacing in mind when creating the final design due to the functionality that our material offers.
Our surfacing extends the offering of normal surfacing solutions through the ability to thermoform it. We are able to bend and morph our material to suit any design without losing out on functionality or product quality. The reception desks are situated in areas that experience high foot traffic and need to be able to withstand bumps, scratches and heavy parcels/packages moving across the material. Our solid surfacing is able to create the visual aesthetic while being incredibly hard-wearing – making it the perfect solution for the design.
After our initial brief meeting, The Signature Group provided us with a prefabricated carcass based on the architect’s design. It is so important to work from a sturdy carcass when creating the thermoformed design so that the final result is of excellent quality. Due to the sheer size of the desks, it became apparent that creating a seamless finish was going to be difficult. We carefully planned the construction of the reception desks which allowed us to complete the project to the highest standard possible.
We used 12mm thick Staron Bright White from Salvocorp as the feature surface for the reception desks- this alludes to a clean finish that is incredibly easy to maintain. Part of the design called for a special branding feature for the company. We used our CNC machine to create a cutout of the company logo that would then be backlit. This creates a fantastic first appearance when walking into the space.
The combination of the timber joinery elements that wrap the main entrance and the solid surfacing reception desk enhances the architectural movement of the space. The curves are accentuated as the eye is drawn around and up to marvel at the interior features.
It was exciting to work on this project with The Signature Group and WRKSHP Interior Design Studio to create an incredible final product that compliments all aspects of the development. The solid surfacing desk works in unison with the joinery and they all speak to the overall architecture of the building. Not only were they functionally well thought out, but the aesthetic outcome is beautiful.
